Sauvignon Blanc is such an interesting grape varietal and can be vinified into several different styles. At Angels Gate, the house style is to maximize on the fruit character of the wine while maintaining that racey acidity. The acidity is a hallmark of this varietal and creates structure and finesse. This wine fits neatly between Unoaked Chardonnay and Pinot Gris.
On the nose, look for that lemon zest and a hint of grapefruit. One might also find some classic grassy notes or a herbal quality. Enjoy this Sauvignon Blanc with your favourite fish recipe and you won't be disappointed.
To top it all off this wine won a Gold Medal at the 2019 Ontario Wine Awards!

What is a GSM? Well, it could be a few different blends if you are in the wine know. Our example is an elegant blend of Gamay, Syrah and Merlot.
The unique combination of these three varietals brings something really special to the party. The Gamay provides a soft, refreshing and fresh red berry note. The Syrah brings structure to the palate as well as a bit of smoke and spice while the Merlot does what Merlot does best and provides a soft and velvety finish.
The GSM is part of our limited addition wines with a production of just 200 cases.
Best paired with grilled meats, light fish or pasta dishes.

With the passing of autumn brings the return of winter and for Canadians this usually means snow. However, for Canadian winemakers this signifies a new harvest. With temperatures falling below minus 8 degrees, our icewine harvest commences and luscious concentrated icewines are produced from frozen grapes.
Due to its high sugar content icewine can age gracefully for many years. They take on a darker almost amber like hue after a few years but the most exciting part is the development of the mature fruit. The notes change from fresh apricot and peaches to poached pear, baked apple and honey. Vintage icewines almost always taste better and offer far more complexity.
Icewine can be paired with food but you have to be careful to not upset the balance. Try something like blue or soft cheese, fruit tarts or baked fruit.

Pinot Noir is something that is close to Philip's heart and he has been growing and vinifying this grape variety since the 80's. In Niagara, Pinot Noir can be a difficult grape to cultivate as it doesn't like too much water but shuts down without enough water. It likes the sun but not too much sun. It likes slope but only if it is in the right soil conditions and the list goes on. Essentially it is the prima donna of grape varietals.
All that being said, when you get it right it produces such an elegant and complex wine. If you like the big, bold, beat you over the head kind of reds then Pinot Noir isn't for you. This grape is understated by comparison but has nuances that Cabernet can only dream of.
Our Pinot Noir collection takes a look at three very distinct examples.
2019 Pinot Noir - This is a blend of Pinot Noir from several estate vineyards and designed to offer as much consistency as is possible from vintage to vintage.
2016 Mountainview Pinot Noir - This wine is sourced from our estate vineyards that are located on the Beamsville Bench. This gives one a good sense of what "Bench" fruit is like.
2017 Angels Step Pinot Noir - Farmed organically and all sourced from one vineyard on the west end of the Beamsville Bench.
Your package comes complete with 1 bottle of each Pinot Noir as well as personal notes from Philip about these three examples.

Happy Easter Friends and Family!
Here is a selection of family favourites hand picked to pair up with some Easter fare.
Starting with sparkling is always a good idea and we really enjoy the off-dry experience offered by our Snow Angel Riesling. The Icewine dosage adds that little extra complexity and sweetness making this traditional method sparkler refreshing and versatile.
Next we move on to our Muscato. Sometimes it lives in the shadow of our Sussreserve Riesling but it really doesn't need to. It is unique and definitely the most aromatic wine in the family. Getting your nose out of the glass to enjoy a sip takes focus.
Then we move on to the Noir's. A rivalry spanning the ages these two brothers are distinct but share a common heritage.
On one hand, Gamay Noir the lesser known varietal and often thought to be too light but anyone who has enjoyed this wine with a the right meal will know that it is complex at all turns.
That brings us to Pinot Noir. Maybe the most fickle of all red vinifera. Here is a varietal that requires so much special attention that it is often a frustration to winemakers, right up until you try the first glass. Like Gamay it is elegant but complex.
This package includes a bottle of:
Snowangel Riesling Sparkling wine
2017 Muscato
2019 Gamay Noir
2019 Pinot Noir

If you want to spread your wine wings and try three completely different wines then this is the package for you.
2019 Rose - Does Rose qualify as red wine? That is debatable but this choice certainly has a lot more in common with red than white. Despite its pale appearance this wine is complex and has all of the fruits that you would expect from Pinot Noir and to top it off it is dry.
2017 GSM - Gamay, Syrah and Merlot blended together to give us a wine that is soft on the nose with some acidity on the palate but more texture and a stronger finish then one would expect from Gamay.
2017 Mountainview Syrah - A winery staff favourite! Everything great Syrah should be with that black pepper and spicy nose followed by the blackberry and leather laced palate. Leave this wine in the glass for 30 minutes and it becomes even more exciting.

Here is a collection that highlights the many faces of Sauvignon Blanc. It is just grass, gooseberry and high acidity. In fact, it is a very versatile grape variety as shown in these examples.
2017 Sauvignon Blanc - Here we establish the benchmark and likely the style that most of us think of.
2017 Fume Blanc - This time we take the Sauivgnon Blanc grape and show it some light oak. This changes the nose but more importantly it increases the texture on the palate. If we didn't tell you it was oaked you might not guess because the application of oak is so minimal and meant to round out the palate rather than give it an oaky, toasty character.
2016 Archangel Sauvignon Blanc - Sauvignon Blanc is always dry and a table wine, right? Not in this case! The natural higher levels of acidity in this grape make it perfect for sparkling. The dosage adds a bit of sweetness rounding out the palate and giving it a but more of a fruit forward nose.
Which do you think you might like best?
