Pinot Noir has been close to Philip’s heart since the ’80s. This varietal is the prima donna of grapes…it needs just the right amount of sun, rain and slope/soil otherwise it will not shine. Luckily, Philip works his magic every vintage and produces some of the best Pinot Noir in Canada.
Our Winemaker’s Pinot Noir Collection offers 3 distinct wines, each accompanied with personal notes from Philip.
1 bottle 2019 Pinot Noir - This wine is a blend of Pinot Noir grapes from several of our vineyards in Beamsville.
1 bottle 2016 Mountainview Pinot Noir - The grapes for this wine have come solely from our estate vineyard on the Beamsville Bench.
1 bottle 2017 Angels Step Pinot Noir - Our organically farmed grapes for this Pinot Noir are grown in the west end of the Beamsville Bench.
What is the definition of Old Vines?
Well, it means different things to different people. The term is not regulated in Canada making it often an over used term. At Angels Gate we look at it in terms of our viticultural history in Niagara. The first commercial wineries to open up after prohibition would be turning about 50 this year. Our old vines have been producing for more than 40 vintages.
The advantage of these old vines are that they have had time to grow a very intricate an deep root structure. This core strength allows these vines to extract the best of the Beamsville Bench. Although the vines produce better fruit they also produce less fruit which keeps production to about 120 cases.
Our Old Vines Chardonnay is produced from grapes hand harvested from a tiny 4 acre vineyard located next to the winery. Upon arriving at the winery, the grapes are hand sorted and whole berry pressed to extract only the finest juice. The juice then goes on to ferment in new and seasoned French oak barrels and is left on its lees for 10 months to add complexity.
This is the only wine in the Angels Gate family to have been produced in all 20 years of our winemaking history.
Our Mountainview Merlot has an intense nose of cherry, raspberry, and black plum. The oak treatment is subtle giving the terroir the opportunity to express itself while the addition of appassimento Merlot only adds to the characteristic to the wine.
We enjoy pairing this Merlot with mushroom dishes, red meat, pork loin or wood oven pizza.
