What is the definition of Old Vines?
Well, it means different things to different people. The term is not regulated in Canada making it often an over used term. At Angels Gate we look at it in terms of our viticultural history in Niagara. The first commercial wineries to open up after prohibition would be turning about 50 this year. Our old vines have been producing for more than 40 vintages.
The advantage of these old vines are that they have had time to grow a very intricate an deep root structure. This core strength allows these vines to extract the best of the Beamsville Bench. Although the vines produce better fruit they also produce less fruit which keeps production to about 120 cases.
Our Old Vines Chardonnay is produced from grapes hand harvested from a tiny 4 acre vineyard located next to the winery. Upon arriving at the winery, the grapes are hand sorted and whole berry pressed to extract only the finest juice. The juice then goes on to ferment in new and seasoned French oak barrels and is left on its lees for 10 months to add complexity.
This is the only wine in the Angels Gate family to have been produced in all 20 years of our winemaking history.

What is a GSM? Well, it could be a few different blends if you are in the wine know. Our example is an elegant blend of Gamay, Syrah and Merlot.
The unique combination of these three varietals brings something really special to the party. The Gamay provides a soft, refreshing and fresh red berry note. The Syrah brings structure to the palate as well as a bit of smoke and spice while the Merlot does what Merlot does best and provides a soft and velvety finish.
The GSM is part of our limited addition wines with a production of just 200 cases.
Best paired with grilled meats, light fish or pasta dishes.

This is the first vintage of this single vineyard designated wine. The Angels Step vineyard is an immaculate vineyard on the west side of the Beamsville Bench. Its 25 acres are sloped at a gradual step down that perfectly highlights everything that the bench is known for: slope, elevation, rich soil, excellent drainage and airflow.
This Pinot Noir is a very gentle but complex expression of the grape varietal. On the nose it has lots of cherry, earth, cedar and a bit of spice. The palate is medium to full with lots of raspberry and cherry. The acidity is really special giving this wine a refreshing note which would make it perfect for food.
The vinification includes more than 14 months in French oak barrels which offers excellent texture and softer tannins to the palate.

Bin 95, a limited edition wine, was hand selected for quality fruit. Made in the appassimento-style, the grapes were dried for 80 days before crushing and fermentation. Three weeks after fermentation, the wine was drained from the skins and current vintage wine was added to the skins for further maturation and extraction. This wine is a blend of these two components which enhances the fruit characteristics and produces a wine of exceptional body and complexity. 65% Cabernet Franc Appassimento and 35% Shiraz. Matured for 24 month in 600L barrels.
